I’m sure you’ve gone back to a place and appreciated it more because you had a Guide to accompany you. Cities, exhibitions, design objects all acquire a deeper dimension and greater appeal when there’s someone to help us explore them. This is why we’ve decided to invite you to “Meet the Team”, a brief exploration of the FAP Ceramiche manufacturing processes: colour research, choice of materials, techniques, innovation and tradition that come together thanks to the collaboration of artists and artisans, offering Architects, Interior Designers and Design Engineers something unique and original: beauty, performance and effective solutions for creating interior design projects.

Interview with Alessandra Carboni, Product Manager at FAP.

FAP Design looks towards fashion and lifestyle, but above all towards new living styles and today’s practical requirements. What kind of research do you carry out before imagining a new collection?

Before we start creating a new collection, we always gather together information: we consult magazines in the sector and the forecasts of our style consultants regarding the trends on the way in the coming years; we attend trade fairs and seminars, and cross-reference this information with our own statistical data and the indications and requests we receive from our suppliers and retailers.

We remain constantly surrounded by this flow of information and suggestions, which comes from all sorts of sources near and far, ranging from our local area to macro-trends worldwide. We observe the work of architects, artists, designers, photographers and our craftsmen. We’re always on the lookout for new images, and Instagram is another source of inspiration!

Trade shows are among the most important moments in this process, because they offer an essential, direct contact, offering customers, suppliers, professionals in the sector and visitors to convey their impressions and share sensations, observations and requests.

FAP maintains a craftsmanship dimension, despite the high technological content of its products.
How do you manage to team a contemporary approach with tradition, performance and technical quality with artistic craftsmanship?

Ceramics are a material with a memory. Like natural materials, wood and stone, they’re part of a style code and system people love.

Today ceramic material has become exceptionally technologically advanced, but it essentially remains earth, glaze and fire. Its ancient roots come through in all the manufacturing processes, and its craftsmanship heart beats even more strongly. Thanks to these precious resources, industrial ceramics are replete with references to the past, while offering exceptional performance.

The contemporary appeal of ceramics lies in the possibility they offer to create a work with a craftsmanship flavour, while minimising the errors, flaws and waste that are inevitable in the craft process.
What is “industrial” are the control we have, the perfect results, the pursuit of lower consumption and less waste and pollution: new technologies allow us to create an increasingly eco-friendly ceramic product.

The Italian ceramic sector today is an example of sustainable manufacturing processes.

  • we recycle water
  • we use cogeneration systems to recover energy
  • we reduce emissions using sophisticated technologies
  • we recover waste and all the materials we can
  • we use carefully selected pigments and earth
  • we don’t pollute the water or the soil

Earthenware ceramics return to the earth, because it is a natural material that contains no toxic elements and can be recovered throughout its entire life cycle.
