Smart space and sustainable furnishings

Space continues to be conceived in a fluid way, furnished with essential pieces of furniture that can be transformed and personalised to change function and setting according to the needs of the moment.

Design pieces of furniture change function: sofas become longer, while tables and console tables are reduced in size, leaving space for other activities.

Naturalness and sustainability have come the fore: green plants, flowers, aromatic herbs, objects and pieces of furniture in wicker, rattan, glass, stone, copper and wood, which returns as a protagonist with its irrepressible beauty also in the form of floors and coverings made with a resistant and sustainable material par excellence: wood-effect porcelain stoneware!

Living area and sleeping area

The living area will be the true protagonist of design in 2022.

Spacious, comfortable living areas, furnished with light, versatile or suspended furniture, wide sofas and lots of greenery, also on the walls where we will see touches of urban jungle, forests and secret gardens!

Wainscotting has come back to the kitchen and there’s a preference for tops, worktops and islands covered with the same ceramics or with coordinated contrasting series.

Nature and decoration also make a return to the sleeping area: furniture and fabrics in organic materials, calming polychrome shades and large floral wall tiles to decorate the environment and make it more dreamy, like this Flower Blu from the Milano Mood collection.

Brilliant colours inspired by nature dominate in bathroom furnishing; large, elegant and modern floor-level showers, mosaics interpreted in a contemporary style and suspended sanitaryware to make bathrooms more spacious.

The preferred materials: glass, stone, wood and marble to create relaxing, intimate and elegant environments.

Contrasts and decorative elements

While design is oriented towards harmony for the wellbeing of those experiencing it, there is still the desire for contrasts between materials, motifs and colours for making a space livelier and more interesting. Use is made of unusual combinations, such as cold and shiny marble and the oxidized burnished metal plates of the Roma Gold collection (120X278), to define interiors like they were high fashion garments. Then there are details that break the linearity of shapes, style or colour since, as the “contrast principle” teaches, it is in juxtapositions that beauty is expressed.

Another must in 2022 design is decoration, an indispensable element for making environments unique, lending a personal touch and making the ordinary extraordinary.

Interiors become veritable sets for enacting daily events, framing a work video-conference or a pleasant moment on the sofa, thanks to original combinations between material surfaces and contrasting colours, or hyper-decorated wall tiles inspired, in their form and colour, by forests and multi-coloured landscapes, like FAP Murals Flower Corten, a continuous-pattern decoration of multi-coloured leaves and flowers, crystallised by contrasting glossy lacquers on matt backgrounds.

Pantone 2022: “Very Peri”

The colour of the year is called “Very Peri” and was spoiled by none other than Lady Gaga on the carpet of "House of Gucci" last December. The Pantone 17-3938 is a bold and joyful periwinkle, with undertones of purple and red, chosen by the Institute to capture the spirit of the times (zeitgeist) and the transition that the world is going through and, at the same time, to encourage optimism and transmit confidence and energy.

“The starting point was the family of blues”, declared the Executive Director of Pantone Leatrice Eiseman. - “It’s a well-known colour, which corresponds to familiarity and comfort. It includes the security and pleasure factor that many people find in blue. There was also the wish to transmit a sense of freshness, a push towards the future that also includes the digitalized world. This is where the purple-red undertone came into play.”
